Legal issues & young onset dementia
A current research project examines the legal challenges, frameworks, and unmet needs specific to young onset dementia in Australia. The circumstances and needs of people with young onset dementia, and those who support them, are often different from those of older people. We have conducted a detailed literature review on legal issues arising in the context of young onset dementia, including academic publications, government reports, and practice-based resources relevant to legal needs, capacity and rights protections. We also undertake interview and focus group research to hear directly from people living with young onset dementia, family carers, service providers and clinicians about how legal issues manifest in practice. This research is funded by the Young People in Nursing Homes National Alliance, as part of the Commonwealth-supported Joint Solutions Project. Our report from this project will be released in May 2025.
