Criminal risk behaviours
Some people with dementia, including younger onset dementia, have changes in their behaviour that may lead to problems or disputes with other people. In some situations, conflicts may lead to contact with police and the criminal legal system.
Activities
Scale development
We have created the first validated tool to assess criminal risk behaviours in dementia, known as the Misdemeanours and Transgressions Screener (MATS). The scale developed by Fiona Kumfor, John Hodges and Cassandra Kaizik. It was based on an extensive review of the literature, case studies and our clinical experience. It has been translated into Dutch and Finnish. If you are interested in using the MATS, please email us at dementialaw@gmail.com.
Scoping review

Our scoping review examines empirical research that has investigated the views and experiences of the following groups in relation to criminal risk behaviours among community-dwelling people with dementia:
-
people with dementia themselves;
-
carers and family members of people with dementia;
-
police; and
-
legal professionals.

Interview study

Through an in-depth interview study we are hearing from key informants, including carers of people with dementia, people living with dementia and professionals.

Insights from safeguarding, health and advocacy services

We have collaborated with Carers NSW, the NSW Ageing and Disability Commission, and Dementia Support Australia to investigate dementia caregiving experiences and behaviours in the context of dementia that raised concerns about abuse or offending. This research was funded by a University of Technology Sydney Collaboration Scheme grant. A report from this project will be released in July/August 2025.
